T-cell immunoglobulin and mucin-domain containing-3 (TIM-3), is a protein that regulates macrophage activation. Inhibits T-helper type 1 lymphocyte (Th1)-mediated auto- and alloimmune responses and promotes immunological tolerance. May be also involved in T-cell homing. Receptor for LGALS9.TIM3, an immune checkpoint, is a Th1-specific cell surface protein that regulates macrophage activation and enhances the severity of experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis in mice. The Tim-3 pathway may interact with the PD-1 pathway in the dysfunctional CD8+ T cells and Tregs in cancer.
